Losing a job is like getting into a high-speed auto accident. It is likely not your fault at all, but you are traumatized by the event. One of my friends lost sleep and 5 lbs in a week, although she didn’t like her job at all. It is a complex and stressful experience. However, there are eight steps you can take to recover and move forward in your professional journey:
- Take time to grieve: Allow yourself time to process the emotions that come with losing a job. It’s okay to feel sad, angry, or confused. Talk to family members, friends, or other employees to hear their advice or insights, or take time alone in solitude.
- Reflect on the experience: Take the time to reflect on your previous experience and go through what went well and what didn't. Learn from the pros and cons and use that knowledge for the future. Please don’t blame yourself for any mistakes.
- Update your resume and Linkedin: Make sure your resume is up to date and tailored to the type of job you're looking for. Add the most recent experience and keywords. The A2C program offers support tailored to your career and expectations, including sessions dedicated to reviewing resumes. We offer free 12-month coaching, three live sessions each week to help you.
- Network each day: Reach out to your professional network, let them know you're looking for new opportunities and ask for referrals. A2C and Be the Change Foundation have an extensive network for job referrals, with professionals in a wide variety of industries and positions. A lot of people want to help you with many job opportunities. Please just ask.
- Apply for jobs every day: Start looking for job opportunities that align with your skills and experience. Utilize online job boards, recruitment agencies, and professional organizations. A2C will help you with creating LinkedIn profiles, and the resources we have will enable you to grow your network immediately.
- Upskill or reskill: Consider taking courses, attending workshops or gaining certifications in areas that are in demand or that you're interested in to make yourself more marketable. A2C can connect you with the California Science and Technology University, where you can obtain a master's degree in a subject that aligns with your career goals.
- Stay positive: Have a positive mindset and believe in yourself. While it may be hard at first, remember that job loss is not a reflection of your worth as a person. A positive attitude projects positive energy and will help you win a job offer. Treat every interview as a learning process.
- Take care of yourself: Remember to prioritize your physical and mental well-being during this time. Stay active, eat well, and maintain a healthy work-life balance. Part of the A2C offerings is daily zoom based online exercises that allow you to stay active within our community.
A career journey can have its ups and downs, just like a hiking trail. There can be challenging times, such as layoffs when you're in a valley, but with persistence and hard work, you can reach the top of the mountain and experience success and fulfillment. It's important to remember that these ups and downs are a natural part of growth and that they can help you gain valuable skills and experience that will serve you well in the long run.
Please don’t hike alone. Get coaches, mentors, and a supportive group, and you can recover much faster.
